Project

Procedural safeguards for children who are suspects or accused persons in criminal proceedings FRA Framework Contract 2018-2022

The project focuses in particular on the procedural safeguards for children who are suspects or accused persons in criminal proceedings. These safeguards are prescribed in Directive (EU) 2016/800 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 May 2016 on procedural safeguards for children who are suspects or accused persons in criminal proceedings.

The research methodology will comprise two components: 1) small-scale desk research, including a legal overview and contextual background information, and 2) social fieldwork research consisting of 20 semi-structured interviews per country with criminal justice and other professionals working with children who are suspects or accused persons, to be carried out via electronic means of communication or face-to-face where this is preferred by an interviewee and provided that the situation with respect to the COVID-19 pandemic at the time of fieldwork allows for this subject to prior approval by FRA.

FGB – as Italian contractor of the FRANET multi-disciplinary research network – will conduct the research in Italy, providing FRA with desk-research on the Italian legal background and with the 20 semi-structured interviews. The results emerging from these two activities will be summarised in a final country report.
