FAIR's workshop on fundamental rights at Roma Tre University

As coordinator of the project EU Charter of fundamental rights: awareness raising and instrument to promote a culture of rights (FAIR), Fondazione Giacomo Brodolini is organising the public workshop Independent Authorities in Italy: What Present and Future Role for the Protection of Fundamental Rights?. The event will take place on Monday, 12 May 2025, at the Department of Political Science of Roma Tre University (Room 4A), from 09.00 AM to 12.30 PM.

Funded by the European Commission through the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) programme, FAIR brings together research centres, universities, and civil society organisations to raise awareness and enhance the implementation of the European Charter of Fundamental Rights across 9 EU Member States: Italy, Belgium, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Croatia, Spain, Cyprus, Portugal and Greece.

"The event will be open to the general public and will bring together ombudspersons, institutional representatives and legal experts, who will discuss how independent authorities protect rights, current challenges, and future strategies for strengthening their role" explains Marta Capesciotti, Social Justice expert at Fondazione Brodolini and scientific coordinator and project manager of the FAIR project.

Capesciotti will open the workshop, followed by interventions from Cristiana Carletti, Professor of International Law at Roma Tre University, and Minister Giovanni Battista Iannuzzi, President of the Italian Interministerial Committee for Human Rights (CIDU).

The workshop will then feature contributions from Valentina Calderone, Ombudsman for the rights of persons deprived of their liberty of the Municipality of Rome, and Marino Fardelli, Ombudsman of the Lazio Region and President of the National Coordination of Ombudsmen of the Italian Regions and Autonomous Provinces.

Participation in the workshop is free and open to all.
