Our contribute to Cedefop's study on citizenship education in Ivet

As part of the framework contract with the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (Cedefop), Fondazione Giacomo Brodolini is carrying out a three-year research study on citizenship education in initial vocational education and training (IVET). On 18 September 2025, the first advisory group meeting of the project, focusing on Citizenship competence in IVET, took place online.

The study explores how VET systems can foster democratic values, civic competences, and social inclusion alongside employability, with the aim to provide evidence and policy guidance to strengthen the role of VET in shaping active, informed, and resilient citizens.

During the meeting, which brought together policy-makers, social partners, researchers and international organisations, Cedefop presented the preliminary findings from the literature review carried out by FGB's research team. The Advisory Group welcomed the results, confirming the relevance and timeliness of the research and providing valuable feedback that marks an important milestone in the project's progress.

Fondazione Brodolini also presented the methodological framework developed for the study, outlining the analytical steps designed to map and assess how citizenship competences are embedded in VET across Europe.

The study will now move into the field research phase, starting with pilot work in Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Portugal, followed by further case studies in Romania, Czechia, Estonia and Italy. The final results, which are expected in 2027, will deliver evidence and strategic guidance for EU VET policymakers and training providers, reinforcing the contribution of vocational education to active citizenship and democratic participation.
