Tackling skills shortages in Europe, our Knowledge Apéro in Brussels

On Tuesday, 14 October 2025, Fondazione Giacomo Brodolini will host the Knowledge Apéro Tackling Skills Shortages: Turning Data into Action, an informal afterwork event to explore approaches to diagnosing and measuring skill needs in Europe. The event will take place at FGB's Brussels premises (19A Avenue Marnix Building A, 3rd floor) from 6.00 PM to 8.00 PM.

Knowledge Apéros are after-work informal gatherings organised by FGB where invited guests share ideas over a glass of wine, fostering inspiration and amplifying the value generated by individuals, institutions and companies.

During the event, speakers from four Horizon Europe projects (MOBI-TWINRe-Place EUPREMIUM_EU and SkillsPULSE, coordinated by FGB) will share insights on assessing and measuring skill needs in the EU, drawing on evidence from their projects.

From mapping workforce mobility and regional attractiveness, to measuring quality of life, modelling policy impacts, and developing innovative ways to match skills with emerging needs, each project will provide a basis to address skill issues in Europe and start exploring what should be happening in the future.

"Each respective Horizon Europe project can contribute something novel to addressing this issue and, in doing so, make a positive contribution to the Union for Skills" says Liga Baltina, Head of FGB Labour Market and Skills Research Unit and coordinator of SkillsPULSE project.

Following an introduction by Terence Hogarth, Professor at the Institute for Employment Research, University of Warwick, and member of FGB's scientific committee, the event will feature contributions from Anastasia Panori (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki), Jennifer McGarrigle (University of Lisbon), Peter Meister-Broekema (Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen), and Lukasz Arendt, Lodz University, Poland.

In addition, on the same day, SkillsPULSE will participate in the interactive session From insight to impact: leveraging data-driven approaches for smarter regional policy, during the 23rd European Week of Regions and Cities in Brussels, together with the same four Horizon Europe projects featured in the Knowledge Apéro.

The event is open to both invited and external guests, upon previous online registration via Eventbrite. Please note that FGB's Brussels office is located in a historic building which regrettably has some architectural barriers – namely steps at the entrance and very small lifts – and is not fully accessible to persons with reduced mobility.
